Create and manage segments

Create, duplicate, edit, save, and delete custom user and account segments.

Written by Simon Herd

Create a custom segment when you need an audience that is specific to your team, workflow, or product question. You can start from scratch or duplicate a suggested or custom segment and tailor the copy.

The new segment form

Create a segment

  1. In the workspace navigation, select the plus icon next to Segments.

  2. Enter a name for the segment.

  3. Choose User segment or Account segment.

  4. Add filters that define who belongs in the segment.

  5. Choose ALL or ANY for the filters, then use filter groups and Add to group when you need to organise more detailed logic.

  6. Select Add segment.

The matching user or account list updates as filters change, so you can inspect the audience as you build it.

Duplicate a segment

Open the segment you want to reuse, then open Options and choose Duplicate. Accoil creates a copy that you can rename, change, and save as a new custom segment.

Duplicating a segment from its Options menu

Duplicating is useful when an existing audience is close to what you need but should not be changed directly.

Edit a custom segment

Change the filters or name on a custom segment to update its definition. The matching list changes as you work.

When you have changes that are not yet applied, choose the action that fits the change you want to make:

  • Save changes or Update segment updates the existing custom segment.

  • Save as new segment creates a new custom segment from the edited version.

  • Cancel or Discard changes returns to the original definition.

Work with suggested segments

Suggested segments cannot be overwritten or deleted. You can change the filters while exploring one, but save the result as a new custom segment when you want to keep a changed version.

Delete a custom segment

Use the segment's Options menu to delete a custom segment. Deleting a segment removes its saved definition, so use duplicate or save as new when you want to preserve a version before changing it.

Options available for a custom segment

Choose the columns in the segment table

Select Columns visible to choose which traits appear in the table. You can show up to eight traits, alongside the Accoil metrics available for that segment.

Take action on selected rows

Select users or accounts with the checkboxes in the table, then open Actions. Available actions depend on the integrations connected to your workspace and can include exporting to CSV, sending traits to HubSpot, or sending events to Intercom.

Check custom-segment usage

Custom segments count toward your plan's segment limit. If you reach the limit, go to Settings > Account settings > General to see where custom segments exist across products and workspaces.
